Chinese New Year Celebration turn into deadly due to Stampede in Shanghai

Millions of people took to the streets around the world from Sydney to New York to usher in 2015 on Thursday, but in China celebrations turned to tragedy when 35 people were killed in a stampede in central Shanghai. The stampede was triggered when people rushed to pick up fake money thrown from a building. Another 42 people were also injured in the crush, which happened shortly before midnight, the city's government said in a statement, adding that the incident was under investigation.
Official news agency Xinhua cited a witness saying coupons that looked like US dollar notes were thrown from a third-floor window and revellers along the river bank started to scramble for them. It was not immediately clear what triggered the stampede, but state media and a witness said the incident was caused when people tried picking up fake money thrown from a building.
